DATANORM is a standard procedure for the exchange of article/master data between manufacturers, specialised dealers and the trade. It is based on record descriptions that the DATANORM data exchange working group has designed and defined in detail with the collaboration of associations, manufacturers, specialised dealers and software houses.

DATANORM was first published in 1986 and, following the record descriptions described in the DATANORM books, the exchange of article/master data quickly became a widespread service offered by suppliers in the installation and construction trades. In the years that followed, DATANORM was used in more and more sectors and areas of trade.

The rapid development in communication technology placed additional demands on DATANORM and these were included in the subsequent versions.

Further development was completed with version 5 in 1999.
